A murder investigation is under way after a man was stabbed to death in Croydon.

Police were called at approximately 19:45hrs on Tuesday, 23 May to reports of a stabbing in Pawsons Road.

Officers attended along with the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance.

A 22-year-old man was found with stab injuries. He was taken to hospital, where was pronounced dead a short time later.

His next of kin have been informed and they will be supported by family liaison officers.

At this early stage it is believed the man sustained his injuries following an altercation in nearby Mayo Road.

Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command are leading the investigation.

Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain, local policing commander for south London, said: “First of all, I want to express my sincere condolences to the family and friends of this young man. Our officers are supporting them during this awful time and I want to reassure them, and the local community, that we are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.

“A lot of work has taken place overnight and detectives will remain at the scene throughout the day as they continue to piece together what happened. Local neighbourhood officers will also be in the area to respond to any concerns you may have.”

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, the senior investigating officer, added: “If you were in the area of Mayo Road and Northbrook Road yesterday evening and saw or heard a group of black males engaged in an altercation while walking, running, or arguing in the street, please contact us immediately.”

A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

There have been no arrests.
