27 July 2023 19:50 Officer to face misconduct hearing after being convicted of assault PC Deniz Ali assaulted a man outside a nightclub in Shoreditch whilst he was off-duty.

An officer has been found guilty of assault following an incident outside a nightclub in Shoreditch.

PC Deniz Ali, attached to North Area BCU, appeared at Stratford Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 27 July where he was convicted after a trial.

PC Ali remains suspended from duty and was bailed to attend Thames Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on Wednesday, 30 August.

In the early hours of Sunday, 23 October 2022, PC Ali was off-duty in Shoreditch when he approached two men who he believed were offering illegal cabs and taking videos of women.

He produced his warrant card and showed it to one of the men, who he shook forcefully. As he attempted to walk away, PC Ali grabbed his jacket and pulled him back, dragging him to the floor.

When interviewed, PC Ali said he believed he thought the man was carrying a weapon.

Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines, commander of the North Area Basic Command Unit, said: “Our officers should have no doubt as to what is expected of them and it clear these actions do not align with the high standards we set.

“The powers given to us as officers must be used fairly and correctly and when this does not happen, officers should expect to be held to account.”

Misconduct proceedings will take place on a date to be set.
