Metropolitan Police officers are trained in first aid, and every day they take action to help Londoners and on occasions to save lives.

On Wednesday 26 April, three Met firearms officers were first to the scene of a stabbing in Tower Hamlets. The 18-year-old victim was bleeding catastrophically, and one of the Met PCs acted with speed and skill to find the wound and use his index finger to plug a severed artery.

The first aid the officers administered included haemostatic dressings, which they used to control the teenager’s bleeding.

As part of their role, Armed Response Vehicle officers are required to undertake enhanced first aid training to help with those who may be seriously injured.

The officers then assisted ambulance colleagues in maintaining the critically injured teenager’s airway, and the PC continued to manually plug the wound with his hand while the patient was taken to hospital. The teenager remains in hospital, however his condition is not believed to be life-threatening.

Urgent enquiries continue into the stabbing. There has been no arrest at this stage.
