Written Statement: Doctor of Education (EdD) Wales

As part of the Welsh Government’s ongoing commitment to establishing an evidence-informed profession and enhancing opportunities for educators in Wales to support the implementation of the Curriculum for Wales, I am pleased to confirm that a new bilingual Doctor of Education (EdD) (Wales) programme will be available from January 2025.

Building on the success of the National MA Education (Wales) and the existing strong partnership between Welsh Universities, the EdD (Wales) will offer a clear progression route for professionals who are keen to build upon the learning and research experience gained through their Masters, by working with academics across the participating Welsh Universities and with research experts internationally.

In 2017, I chaired the CYPE committee report on the Teachers’ Professional Learning and Education inquiry. This report made it clear that ongoing professional development is vital to deliver on the changing demands on the teaching profession and I am delighted that both the MA Education Wales and now the National EdD Wales will give education professionals the opportunity to thrive through their careers.

The aim of the National EdD (Wales) is to ensure that greater research capacity is built within the Welsh education system, hence this National EdD will offer the unique opportunity to extend and enhance research knowledge, skills, and expertise.

This is a hugely positive development and will ensure that we have appropriately qualified education lecturers for future cohorts. Further information will be available in due course.
